The same name can mean a different game version.

The provider, full title and RTP version identify different aspects of a game.

The title does not identify everything

A game series can include sequels and several versions. The provider and exact title are parts of the game’s identity. Similar artwork or a shortened name does not establish that two listings refer to the same release.

The mathematical version

An RTP version refers to a game’s mathematical configuration. A game name or a promotion code alone does not identify the active configuration. Theoretical return describes long-run mathematical behaviour; it does not forecast the result of an individual spin. Information about one version should not be assumed to apply to every release with a similar name.

Theoretical RTP and observed return

Theoretical RTP describes a game's mathematical model over a large number of plays. Observed return is a historical ratio: recorded payouts divided by recorded stakes over a specified sample. Those quantities can differ substantially in a short sample. Neither is a promise about a particular account's next result.

For example, €48 of payouts from €50 of recorded stakes gives an observed return of 96% for that sample. It does not prove that the theoretical RTP is 96%, or that another €50 of stakes would produce €48. Withdrawals and deposits are not substitutes for the game's payout and stake totals.

Why a short session rarely matches RTP

RTP is a long-run average

The figure describes the theoretical return over a very large number of rounds, not what one player gets in one evening.

Variance in a session

Over a few hundred spins, results can be far above or below RTP. High-volatility games swing the most.

Check the version in the game

The info or help panel inside the game shows the RTP of the version you are playing, which can differ from the default.

RTP, volatility and hit frequency answer different questions

RTP concerns the long-run relationship between stakes and payouts. Volatility concerns the spread of possible outcomes. Hit frequency concerns how often an event classified as a win occurs. A payout smaller than the stake may still be counted as a hit under a particular definition. A single percentage cannot describe all three properties.

For an independent random game, previous losses do not make the next result owe the player a return. A short run of results is not evidence that the game must now compensate for it.

A record that identifies the actual release

  • Provider and complete game title.
  • Version or game identifier, where shown.
  • RTP and rules displayed in that game's help screen.
  • Date and screenshot of the relevant information.
  • Any feature whose rules differ from the base game.

Questions and answers

Does a similarly named game necessarily use the same RTP?

No. Names, artwork and reviews may refer to different releases or configurations. The information for the actual game version is the relevant record.
