Blocking software
Gambling blockers stop access to thousands of gambling websites and apps. GamCare lists two widely used tools: BetBlocker, available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and Fire OS, and Gamban, available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Some blockers are free and some are paid, so check the current terms on the provider's website.
Phone and computer settings
iPhone and iPad have built-in content restrictions in Screen Time. Android devices can use family controls in Google Play. Ask someone you trust to set the passcode so you cannot change the settings on impulse. Your internet provider or antivirus software may also offer a gambling filter.
Blocking gambling payments
Many banks let you block card payments to gambling merchants from the banking app. In Norway, banks must refuse payments to gambling companies without a Norwegian licence. A payment block is one of the most effective barriers, because it works no matter which site you visit.
Combine the tools
- Self-exclude with the national scheme where you live.
- Close accounts at operators the scheme does not cover.
- Install a blocker on every device.
- Turn on a gambling block at your bank.
A layered set-up
Layer one: the register
National self-exclusion stops licensed operators from letting you play.
Layer two: your devices
Blocking software covers sites outside the register on your phone and computer.
Layer three: your money
A bank or card gambling block stops many payments, even if a site gets through the other layers.
Questions and answers
Do blockers stop sites that are not licensed in my country?
Yes. Blocking software works on your device regardless of where a site is licensed.
Can I remove a blocker myself?
Many blockers make removal deliberately difficult. Asking someone else to hold the password adds another barrier.
Does my bank offer a gambling block?
Many do. Look in your banking app's card settings or ask your bank.
