When self-exclusion ends: extending, ending and staying in control

The end of a self-exclusion period can be a risky moment. Knowing the rules in advance lets you decide calmly whether to extend it, and how to protect yourself if you do return.

What happens when the period ends

End of self-exclusion by scheme (checked October 2026)
SchemeFixed periodLongest option
GAMSTOP (UK)Not removed automatically; stays active (for up to 7 more years) until you ask for removal, with at least 24 hours' delay5 years, with optional automatic renewal

ROFUS (Denmark)Temporary periods expire automaticallyFinal: removal can be requested 1 year after registration and must be confirmed again after 7–30 days

Extending is simple

You can usually extend or replace an exclusion before it ends. In Sweden a new exclusion can replace the current one but cannot be shorter. In Denmark a temporary exclusion can be extended. If you are unsure whether you are ready, extending is the safer choice.

Plan for the end date

  • Put the end date in your calendar a few weeks ahead.
  • Talk to a helpline before it expires.
  • Keep blocking software and bank gambling blocks in place.
  • If you return, set deposit and time limits before your first session.
  • Write down your warning signs and what you will do if they return.

Before the end date

Set a reminder

Put the end date in your calendar a few weeks ahead so it does not come as a surprise.

Decide in advance

Make the decision to extend or not on a calm day, ideally with someone you trust.

Have support lined up

Keep a helpline number and your blocking tools in place for the weeks after the exclusion ends.

Operator-level exclusions

In countries without a national scheme, such as Norway and Iceland, exclusions are set with each operator and follow that operator's rules. Ask for written confirmation of the end date and whether the exclusion ends automatically.

Questions and answers

No. It can be ended at the earliest after 12 months, by logging in to Spelpaus.se.

How do I remove a final ROFUS registration?

You can request removal at rofus.nu with MitID at the earliest one year after registering, and must confirm the request again after 7 to 30 days.
